Your balance is not your spending money.
The number in your bank app is true. It is just answering a different question from the one you are asking.
When you open your bank app and see €4,820, it is tempting to read that as what you have to spend. It is not. It is what is in the account today, before anything that already belongs to someone else has left.
Most of it is already spoken for
Rent is due on the first. Your phone, your insurance and a handful of subscriptions come out on fixed days. Groceries and transport are not optional. Once a year, a larger bill arrives that you knew about all along but did not feel coming. None of that shows up as a smaller balance until the day it is paid.
In the example on our homepage, €3,536 of the €4,820 is already committed:
- Obligations€1,640
- Essentials€920
- Yearly costs, set aside€410
- Goals you said matter€380
- Other protected money€186
- Yours to decide€1,284
The number that answers your question
What is left, €1,284, is what you can use without touching any of that. It is a smaller number, and a more useful one. Spend inside it and nothing you care about moves. Spend beyond it and something does: a bill gets tight, or a goal slips.
That is the number Upino puts first. We call it Safe to Spend.
Why this matters more than it sounds
A balance feels like permission. It is one of the main reasons people overspend without meaning to: not carelessness, but a figure that answers the wrong question. Showing the right one does not need a budget, a spreadsheet or a lecture. It only needs the subtraction to happen before you see the number, rather than after.
